Donald Trump has declared for the presidency, so that puts him in a position of adversity towards the sitting president, who is overwhelmingly likely himself to seek the presidency again, so there, at a minimum, is the appearance or question of a conflict and very extraordinary circumstances.

Even if those documents are from the Trump administration, I think if you gave it to Jack Smith, you'd be sending a signal that, you know, it is of a commensurate seriousness as the Trump matter, and it's not, if Garland gives the Pence case to any existing special counsel, it would be to Hur because the Biden case feels much more comparable to the Pence case.

The mistake that was made here is he didn’t need one for Trump, the investigation of Trump, Garland named a special counsel, but there was no basis for that.

I guess before people jump out for any candidate, they want to make sure they are sincere. Nikki certainly has her supporters. Tim is almost universally liked, and obviously South Carolinians have certainly heard about [Florida Gov. Ron] DeSantis and [Virginia Gov.] Glenn Youngkin, there is some wariness over the whole drama that follows President Trump sometimes.

Kevin McCarthy just kicked me and @RepSwalwell off the Intelligence Committee, this is petty, political payback for investigating Donald Trump. If he thinks this will stop me, he will soon find out just how wrong he is. I will always defend our democracy.

It’s unbelievable how this could happen. It’s totally irresponsible, what should be done is exactly what (Attorney General) Merrick Garland did. Put the special counsel. Let’s wait and see. Some people are taking sides. ‘OK, it was more egregious than what President Trump did and what President Biden did.’ And maybe that’s true. I don’t know. Maybe it’s not true. Let’s find out.

There’s a finite pool of talent for presidential campaigns available, and in large, multi-candidate fields there’s intense competition for them. You see this before every presidential cycle when there’s an open shot at the nomination, additionally, even though President Trump starts as the front-runner for the Republican nomination, there’s a lot of trepidation among staffers about working for him. He’s been volatile in the past, and staff haven’t always ended their service with him on great terms. So there’s a desire to look at some of the other candidates in the field and jump on board.

Those documents should not have been in the personal possession of either Joe Biden or Donald Trump, but what happened and followed from it is significantly different, donald Trump defied those who knew the documents were in place and ultimately led to, involuntarily, a court order and a search of his Mar-a-Lago hotel resort to find out how many documents were there.

It’s certainly wonderful that Attorney General Garland has imposed a moratorium. It’s certainly wonderful that he withdrew many of the capital prosecutions that had been authorized under the Trump administration, but there’s more that, from an abolitionist perspective, (Biden) ought to be doing.

President Biden is dealing with a ‘drip’ controversy that has no end in sight and each new revelation makes his criticisms of former President Trump appear ever more hypocritical, when it comes to legal issues, the White House has to be very careful to not intervene politically in this type of investigation. But at the same time, you can't ignore the issue. There's a fine line that Biden and the White House need to walk on.

Nobody has ever done more for Right to Life than Donald Trump. I put three Supreme Court justices, who all voted, and they got something that they’ve been fighting for 64 years, for many, many years, there’s great disloyalty in the world of politics and that’s a sign of disloyalty.

There’s no path to the nomination without winning the evangelical vote. Nobody knows that better than President Trump because, to the surprise of almost everyone, he won their support in 2016, he’s going to get a very fair hearing from voters of faith. But this will be a contested primary with a lot of pro-life candidates and all of them will get to make their case.

The new year is off to a rough start for President Biden, whatever bounce he may have had from the GOP’s lackluster midterms and the drawn-out speaker election may be dissipating. The timing of the classified documents controversy is especially bad for him in light of his rumored 2024 announcement since it neutralizes what was going to be one of his primary lines of attack against former President Trump.

I mean, there are questions about influence peddling when it comes to the Trump family, there's questions about visitor logs when it comes to Mar-a-Lago.

Jake Tapper

And I think the influence peddling with respect to the Trump administration will be a part of our overall investigation, because both Democrats and Republicans have complained about this with the previous two administrations, so something needs to be done. Also, something needs to be done with respect to how classified documents leave the White House and go to the post-presidency.... That's another issue we will try to fix from a legislative point of view.

Joe Biden

Just ask former President Hillary Clinton how questions about the mishandling of classified information can impact the prospects of a campaign. It’s a non ideological issue that resonates with voters across the spectrum. Biden's ability to weather the storm will determine not only the prospect of his 2024 chances, but also the remainder of his first term. it depends on the quantity and depends on the content of the documents. But what it does do is it increases the laugh track sound at Mar-a-Lago because it just reduces, for many people, the anger about Trump and his documents and makes it easier for Biden to be criticized.
