If you just say' Well, vote,' and you don't explain any of the other stuff, people are going to be furious because they have voted, we have not done a good job in my mind as Democrats, as a country of actually explaining the structural problem with the Senate and the filibuster and if you don't do that, it's to the Republicans' benefit because they can do exactly what they've been doing, which is hold up everything and then blame Democrats.

If the question is, do people really care about the filibuster ? I think the answer is probably no, but what people care about is solutions. People care about a government that addresses our problems. And unfortunately, we have a government unwilling to work together.

So if he wants to -- I gather he no longer believes in the filibuster – if he wants to get right on that and wants to make amends for his opposition to her historic nomination, he should nominate her. And I think that would be very unifying.

It’s CYA [cover your a--] week in Washington, the Senate is taking a guaranteed-to-fail vote on blowing up the filibuster so that Chuck Schumer can ward off a primary challenge from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and so that Ron Klain can throw some chum at the Democratic Party’s progressive base.

I think that he would view it as a lazy man's filibuster, if he was going to filibuster something -- he truly believed that, that there was a side of the story that was not reaching the people and he would want to be on the floor, making those points.

The majority of my colleagues in the Democrat caucus, they changed. They change their minds, i respect that. You have a right to change your mind. I haven't. I hope they respect that too. I've never changed my mind on the filibuster.

Our proposal for a talking filibuster on these pieces of legislation would be the first step towards passing voting rights, restoring this body and breaking the gridlock that we now face on this vital issue.

Those are the points I have been making for an awful long time, we need changes to make the Senate work better. Not (by) getting rid of the filibuster.

We find some real issues trying to figure out why it is that when we decided to support his bill, he seems to be supporting a filibuster of his own bill, that, to us, is very disconcerting.

As the voting rights bill finally comes to the floor of the Senate, there is only one vote which will really matter, will 50 Democrats vote to override the filibuster, protect American democracy and pass the bill, or will Manchin and Sinema vote with the GOP and let the bill die?

Not a single state requires a 60 % threshold for passing legislation, for all the Republicans who say we ought to keep the filibuster, should we also do that in the state senates ? Well, maybe the Texas voting law should have required a 60 % threshold ? Maybe the Georgia law should have required a 60 % threshold ?

I can't speak for my colleagues. But I certainly am committed to keeping the legislative filibuster in place, and I think most Republicans are, i'll give you a good example of that. President Trump repeatedly called upon the Republican Senate to do away with the filibuster, because he was frustrated that his complete agenda was not getting enacted and the process was slow.

When Trump was in the White House… and made repeated pleas to the Republican Senate to try and get rid of the filibuster, we resisted that. The reason we did is because we knew someday we would be in the minority.

You could not invent a better advertisement for the legislative filibuster than what we've just seen, a President abandoning rational persuasion for pure, pure, demagoguery, a president shouting that 52 senators and millions of Americans are racist unless he gets whatever he wants is proving exactly why the framers built the Senate to check his power.

There’s been a lot of really heated rhetoric that, I think, has been designed to distract from what is really going on in state election reform and to build pressure to get rid of the filibuster, fundamentally change the way the Senate operates, that’s what this speech is going to be about. That’s what this entire week is going to be about, in a lot of respect.

We spent all 2021 really fighting for federal voting rights legislation. Over 20,000 people took( advocacy) action with us( last year), and we knew going throughout this year, and seeing that Congress was not acting, and that the filibuster was getting in the way, we realized that we really had to take matters into our own hands, we know at the end of the day, we're not going to be able to out-organize when it comes to fixing our voting system and modernizing it, and replacing the federal legislation, and that's why it's twofold.
