Polar vortex
A polar vortex is a persistent, large-scale cyclone located near one or both of a planet's geographical poles. On Earth, the polar vortices are located in the middle and upper troposphere and the stratosphere. They surround the polar highs and lie in the wake of the polar front. These cold-core low-pressure areas strengthen in the winter and weaken in the summer. They usually span 1,000–2,000 kilometers in which the air is circulating in a counter-clockwise fashion. The reason for the rotation is the same as any other cyclone, the Coriolis effect. The Arctic vortex has two centres, one near Baffin Island and the other over northeast Siberia. In the southern hemisphere, it tends to be located near the edge of the Ross ice shelf near 160 west longitude. When the polar vortex is strong, the Westerlies increase in strength. When the polar cyclone is weak, the general flow pattern across mid-latitudes buckles and significant cold outbreaks occur. Ozone depletion occurs within the polar vortex, particularly over the Southern Hemisphere, which reaches a maximum in the spring.

Examples of polar vortex in a Sentence
We learned a lot of lessons from last year’s polar vortex.
Although still reasonably strong, the pace of growth has slowed for three successive months, taking it down to the slowest since January, when business was hit by extreme weather arising from the Polar Vortex. This time, there was little anecdotal evidence from companies of the weather affecting business.
When the stratospheric polar vortex is strong, the jet stream tends to move further north, which keeps the cold air in the Arctic Amplification and allows relatively milder conditions across much of the United States and Eurasia.
We learned a lot of lessons from last year's polar vortex.
We know from observations that the Arctic Amplification region is warming at a much faster rate than other parts of the globe( we call Arctic Amplification), the impact of Arctic Amplification is twofold. First, since Arctic Amplification is getting much warmer, when cold air outbreaks occur in North America and Europe/Asia, they aren't as cold as they were decades ago. The second effect( though currently debated in the science community) is that a warmer Arctic Amplification is also making the stratospheric polar vortex weaker on the average.
