    avers that the word derives from the prefix "a- " ( meaning without ) + " mazos " - a breast , the Amazons being fabled to perform mastectomy ( " mazos " - breast + tomy , temnein - to cut ) of the right breast that they might draw the bow to its full length. "
    a Plausible derivation ; however , I think their arrows have missed the mark in this instance ( forgive the pun ).
    My take on the subject is that the word derives from the Persian , Farsi language.
    and , in the Persian form would read : Hamazana - which is a Conjugated Word from.
    " hama " = a band , group ( of people , warriors , etc. )
    + " zanana " in Persian , from the root " zan " = a woman.
    Zenana per Chamber's Etym. Dict. = the apartments in which Indian women are secluded.

    in Xhosa and Zulu ( the Mother tongue of Nelson Mandela ).
    Nkosizana - means Princess , Dame , Maiden consisting of two parts , viz.
    nkosi - meaning " king " + zana ( female ).
    nkosi is in fact found in the Oxford Dictionary under the Entry :
    Negus - from the Amharic " negus " or n'gus - kinged , king - Title of the supreme ruler of.
    Abyssinia ( present-day Ethiopia ).
    Amazingly , this same root is found in European languages as in :
    Fergus = meaning " fer ' = very + " gus " - noble.
    "Gaass " in Arabic means " special , elite , chosen ".
    I thank you for providing this forum to divulge this information from my research work , which I will publish in the near future.
    I hope it will be of beneficial Knowledge to people.
