Other factors are more important for Gulf hurricanes, wind shear, mid-level moisture and having pre-existing disturbances that develop once they reach the Gulf( or track into the Gulf from elsewhere). Of course, if all those conditions are already there and the waters are warmer than normal, that could certainly exacerbate issues.

Since this is the first study of the decay of submerged permafrost, we don't have long-term data for the seafloor temperature in this region. The data we do have aren't showing a warming trend in these waters 150 meters( almost 500 feet) deep.

There is generally a low reign of food, as it is in the middle of the Pacific Gyre, a low productivity area with little upwelling nutrient rich waters, so though there will be seafloor animals, there will not be a high biomass down there probably.
