The truth of the matter is that what these politicians are doing, they're exploiting really the decency, the decency of the American people, which responded to the situation in this country where racism was much too prevalent and persisted long after the slavery slaves were freed. Across the globe, more than 25 million people are subjected to human trafficking and slavery. In the United States, it's tens of thousands, when you think about the number of people coming across the border and flooding into our cities, those that we don't even know … even those that have been apprehended. Women and children who are being released and Border Patrol agents … I've reported on this in the past, have said we release them and we don't even know if these are their real families.

We have what can be described as modern-day slavery, human traffickers (as opposed to smugglers) lure unsuspecting migrants with promises of all sorts of opportunity in the U.S., and then hold them hostage once they arrive here with threats of violence against them, or family members back home. Often people who are trafficked are forced to work in the sex trades.

Reparations for African Americans are based on paying restitution for 250 years of slavery followed by 100 years of racial apartheid, which we often call Jim Crow. So it's really an attempt to address both the moral harm, and the crime that slavery and Jim Crow were, but also the wealth gap that was created by both of these institutions.

People are really starting to understand the legacy of slavery does exist and impact people a great deal, it's a moral and practical imperative for Congress to embark on the repair process for Black people. It can't continue to stall any longer because the consequences continue to be compounded and the injuries worsened over time.
