The mask is the new T-shirt, when people go to a protest or try to have their opinions about things, people will wear T-shirts or hats or carry signs, but we're not able to protest at the moment. So when people are getting their vote masks and posting selfies online, it's a manifestation of a desire to have that kind of political and societal voice and expression in the ways that we can at the moment.

This protest wasn't about the stay-at-home order, it was an opportunity for a small group of folks -- very few of whom were engaging in social distancing or wearing masks -- to show off their swastika posters, confederate flags, nooses hanging from cars and signs calling for murder, threatening Capitol police, staff, press, and elected members is not how we do business here in Michigan.

Everyone has the right to protest. And I think the governor overreached in a lot of ways. And that upset a lot of people in the state of Michigan, but when we protest, we have to do it in a way that is appropriate. I totally denounce and condemn Nazi symbols that were used in some of the protests. I think it's a terrible idea to come into the capitol with weapons, bearing weapons, knowing that it might be perceived as some form of intimidation toward legislators. So, I denounce those things. But everyone has the right to protest.
