However, an important limitation of these previous studies and the new analysis published today is that the findings are observational and so do not provide evidence of a clear causal link between UPFs and cancer, or the risk of other diseases.

What comes next ? All the tools are working, better than we hoped and promised. Scientific observations, proposed years ago, are being made as we speak, we want to know : Where did we come from ? What happened after the big bang to make galaxies and stars and black holes ? We have predictions and guesses, but astronomy is an observational science, full of surprises.

We're always learning more and more about the disease, from the basic science studies looking at cells and test tubes, to animal models, to human observational studies, to have diagnostics -- that can confirm in life that someone has Lewy body disease -- goes a long way both toward confirming the diagnosis and advancing research.

Although this study found that eating more vegetables wasn't associated with a lower risk of heart and circulatory diseases once other lifestyle and other factors were taken into account, that doesn't mean we should stop eating vegetables, there is good trial evidence that eating foods rich in fibre such as vegetables, can help lower weight, and improve levels of risk factors known to cause heart disease. The present observational study can not overcome such evidence and its conclusions can be debated since the authors may have over adjusted for factors that account for lower intake of vegetables.

There is good trial evidence that eating foods rich in fibre such as vegetables, can help lower weight, and improve levels of risk factors known to cause heart disease. The present observational study can not overcome such evidence and its conclusions can be debated since the authors may have over adjusted for factors that account for lower intake of vegetables, the results are not surprising. Picking out one single component and assuming just adding it to the diet, e.g., vegetables, is not likely to result in the desired effect.

While we stand by our key messages, it is helpful to know that the wording of parts of the policy brief can give rise to misunderstandings. To address this we have updated the document( specifically page 8) to more clearly articulate our conclusions and specifically cite the studies by which they have been reached, in brief, our position is that studies showing a significant cardioprotective effect of alcohol consumption have by-and-large been observational, inconsistent, funded by the alcohol industry, and/or not subject to randomized control. Furthermore, any potential cardioprotective effect is negated by the well-documented risks and harms, rendering our judgment that no amount of consumption can be considered good for heart health.

As with any observational study, we cannot say for certain that the associations we describe between statin use and reduced severity of COVID-19 infection are definitely due to the statins themselves; however, we can now say with very strong evidence that they may play a role in substantially lowering a patient’s risk of death from COVID-19, we hope that our research findings are an incentive for patients to continue with their medication.

Despite many years of research this question about eggs and health has not been answered, with multiple observational studies over the last few decades showing conflicting results -- some suggesting moderate egg intake is good, while others suggesting it may be bad, this study, although well conducted, unfortunately only adds more noise to the discussion.

This is an observational study of hospitalized children. The limitations include that not all cases may have been captured. This also does not account for the true prevalence of significant COVID-19 infection in children, however, on balance it's an important study as it is likely most children with significant illness would have presented to the hospitals.

The problem is when youre observing the disc from inside the system, its almost impossible to see the whole thing at once. While we dont have direct observational evidence for the disc, neither do we have it for Planet Nine, which is why were investigating other possibilities, nevertheless, it is interesting to note that observations of Kuiper belt analogues around other stars, as well as planet formation models, reveal massive remnant populations of debris.

That means it cannot determine cause and effect, the meta-analyses that the authors cite are also mainly based on observational data. On the other hand, large observational studies sometimes are able to detect effects in some groups or for more rare outcomes that trials are not empowered to see, so these studies are still valuable.

For the truth of the conclusions of physical science, observation is the supreme Court of Appeal. It does not follow that every item which we confidently accept as physical knowledge has actually been certified by the Court; our confidence is that it would be certified by the Court if it were submitted. But it does follow that every item of physical knowledge is of a form which might be submitted to the Court. It must be such that we can specify (although it may be impracticable to carry out) an observational procedure which would decide whether it is true or not. Clearly a statement cannot be tested by observation unless it is an assertion about the results of observation. Every item of physical knowledge must therefore be an assertion of what has been or would be the result of carrying out a specified observational procedure.
