‘ First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby carriage ’ is an outdated narrative for millions of people, modern family building and infertility impact every relationship we have. With our partners, friends, family, workplace and most importantly, the relationship we have with our bodies and ourselves.

That report did not surprise me in terms of the content, because it’s been known for some time that infertility is much more prevalent than anyone wants to think about: Having a child and having a family is kind of a universal dream or aspiration for people from every country, from every region. What surprised me was the World Health Organization coming out in support of it, it was a welcome acknowledgment of the other foot dropping on the population front.

These inequities, I’m not surprised that they exist on a global level, because we already see the inequities in the United States domestically, with how infertility impacts different populations and how some populations have limited access. And even with the access that they finally get, they, for example, will have a lower rate of success or even a higher rate of miscarriage, a lot of people don’t have access to clinically vetted evidence-based information around what causes infertility, how to recognize it, and then when you do find out that you have it, how to treat it.

A lot of people don’t have access to clinically vetted evidence-based information around what causes infertility, how to recognize it, and then when you do find out that you have it, how to treat it, the other, which is one of the biggest barriers that we see, is financial access to fertility. In the United States, a lot of that access comes through the employer providing, for example, fertility benefits, but on a global level, that’s not necessarily the case, and finances tends to be the biggest barrier.

The purpose of this analysis was to generate updated data on the global and regional estimates of infertility prevalence by analyzing all available data from different countries, making sure that we take into account different study approaches.

Our message is that infertility needs to be included as a priority in responding to the needs of populations in different countries, this is because people have a right to expect to obtain the highest possible standard of mental, social and physical health as defined by WHO.

Lifetime prevalence of infertility does not differ by income classification of countries, lifetime prevalence was 17.8% in high-income countries and 16.5% in low- and middle-income countries, which, again, was not a substantial or significant difference.

Many people are uneducated on infertility issues and have this belief that IVF will fix it, the concept of IVF fixing infertility needs to end. People sharing their unsuccessful IVF stories will help others see that it isn't their fault. It can help others not feel so alone.

The current infertility narrative is dominated by success stories, as people seem more willing to talk about their experience after they've become a parent, for those of us who close our infertility chapters without a baby, we're often met with unsolicited advice, reinforcing the narrative that we obviously gave up too early.

And of course you have the question,' What's happening with fertility ?' Right now we have a lot of good information that that's completely not happening. There's no reason why parents should be afraid of infertility in kids, and a lot of parents actually do want to vaccinate.

I'm fortunate that I am able to pay out of pocket to be able to do it, but I think the most important thing is not saying,' Every person should go freeze their eggs.' It's that every person should have access to the full range of choices. We know that infertility doesn't discriminate by socioeconomic status, only access to fertility treatments do.

I think vulnerability shows a certain level of masculinity, and I think more of us need to tap into that, we all go through things in our lives, but male infertility does not make you any less of a man.

You need to go back to the science, because men and women will listen to the science. We know that sperm counts have declined 50 to 60% over the last 40 years and that there is a crisis when it comes to male factor infertility, and also we need to raise awareness among men to talk about the challenges that they have faced with fertility.

Vaccines are fundamental to our practices. That's what we do, some got it in their heads that it could cause infertility ; some had other reasons. It's frustrating... [ and ] I don't think it was political. If anything, most of these people are apolitical.

It doesn't mean that you need to shout it from the rooftops or post it to social media, but just engaging those who are closest to you, so many( patients) that I interact with say that once they disclose to their family or to their best friend, that people also told them stories of challenging reproductive issues, whether infertility or pregnancy loss or miscarriage.

It could be that the rolling motion hides some subtle aspects about the health of this sperm or how well it can travel quickly, these are all very hypothetical questions. What we hope is that more scientist and fertility experts will become interested and ask,' OK, how does this influence infertility ?'.

It was horrendous to watch. She was throwing up all this blood and skin. I really thought she was going to die. While doctors managed to stabilize Heron, the condition continued to ravage her body, leaving the skin on her face, chest, back, and arms so burnt that it fell away. Her lips also swelled to the point where they burst and her mouth became covered in painful ulcers. Doctors told us it was one of the worst cases they had ever seen, Carmen Heron said. Danika was barely conscious most of the time, and had this button to press to get pain relief when it became too much. Her organs were failing and she had so much internal scarring. She was being burnt from the inside out. Her entire body was bandaged, and when the dressings were removed, her skin came away too. Finally, after three weeks, Heron slowly began to rally and was discharged six days later. But, her journey was far from over, as she was left with side-effects such as the loss of her hair and nails. Her skin is still healing to this day and she also needs hearing aids as the insides of her ears are so scarred. As well as the physical fallout, she is also fighting the emotional legacy of SJS, having suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. Were still dealing with SJS - it didnt stop when we left hospital, Carmen Heron said. Danika will have days where she feels incredibly low and struggles with flashbacks of being in hospital. Thankfully, if she feels that way, she will phone us right away. We have found that, as a family, its good to talk rather than bottle everything up, however difficult those memories might be. Another side-effect of Heronsordeal was the warning by doctors that, due to the amount of internal scarring she had sustained, it was unlikely she would ever conceive. According to the U.S. Library of National Medicine, SJS and TEN often cause the tissue around the mucous membranes which line various cavities in the body, including the eyes, ears, mouth, vagina, and urethra, as well as covering the organs to die. As a result, women can experience vaginal lesions that lead to painful intercourse, difficulty conceiving, and even infertility. The doctors said they could refer her to a gynecologist to run some tests, but she never went I think she didnt want to hear the answers, Carmen Heron said. But, in December 2018, the Heron family received some news they thought they would never hear. Danika rang me crying. I immediately panicked and said, Whats wrong ?

It was so traumatic. She doesnt remember much, which, in a way, Im thankful for as it was so distressing for her. As medics sprang into action, working around the clock to save Heron, her motherbecame terrified she would not make it. The day after she was admitted to the hospital, it looked as if her worst fears would be realized when Heron suddenly stopped breathing. Her throat had swollen so much that she couldnt breathe, it was horrendous to watch. She was throwing up all this blood and skin. I really thought she was going to die. This study confirms my long-held belief that men with poor sperm quality could potentially improve things by wearing looser underwear and keeping their testicles as cool as possible, it's also important to note the study is not implying underpants are a major cause of infertility -- in fact, fertility has not been measured. There is a big difference between measuring aspects of sperm quality( as done in this study) and measuring fertility.
