I don't know when the Republicans will sit down and heal their wounds, but we are healing our wounds, and we are going to learn how to become a stronger, more effective party.

Well the most important thing we're going to do is to build a fair, level playing field for everybody, i welcome the debate. I think there is going to be a bumper crop of candidates and that the American people are going to see a very robust Democratic Party. What will unite all of them is that they are all fighting for a better deal and a brighter future and better tomorrows for everyone, not just a few at the top. And what we're doing at the DNC is making sure we build the infrastructure, the organizing infrastructure, the technology infrastructure so that whoever ... becomes the nominee that they can walk into a DNC that enables them to sprint across the finish line.Listen hereWhile Perez said he hopes ideas and ideals are what helps to unite his party, it may just be mutual disgust for Trump that will act as the super glue for Democrats.Below are some of excerpts of my interview with DNC Chairman Tom Perez. This QA has been edited for brevity, clarity and flow.Mark Preston: As you look at the current state of play right now, what is the Democratic plan to address Donald Trump in this off year?Tom Perez: Step one is that we have to take on Donald Trump in all of these areas that he's trying to take America back, and make America weak, not make America great. Equally important though, we can't simply be against Donald Trump. We've got to articulate what we are for, and we have always been fighting for a fair shake for everyone. Listen hereFollow CNN OpinionJoin us on Twitter and FacebookPreston: (W)hen you were running for chairman, ... it was a bit of a contentious fight. There was a lot of criticism from the grassroots about the battle between establishment Democrats and grassroots Democrats. ... What is being done behind the scenes to try to bridge the divide between those two (factions)?Perez: Every single day we are leading with our values. ... If we want to address income inequality in this country, one of the most important things we can do is support efforts for people to unionize and form a union. When unions succeed, the middle class succeeds. When unions succeed, income inequality goes down, and what we have to do as a party is be out there on the issues that matter the most to people: health care, good jobs, the efforts to cut support for public education, we have to articulate what we stand for.

Recycling should really be viewed as a last resort rather than the first line of defense, we need to be recycling less, not more. The zero-waste community is going above and beyond recycling by addressing the source of the problem: humans are producing far too much waste. Blogger Kathryn Kellogg has stored the bulk of her waste in a mason jar for the past two years. (Instagram Photo/going.zero.waste) According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans generate more than 250 million tons of trash while only recycling about 1.51 pounds of the approximately 4.5 pounds of waste each person creates daily. Zero waste does not mean producing no waste at all; it simply means sending nothing to a landfill, said Kellogg. While the philosophy of zero waste does include recycling, it embodies a whole-system approach to the vast amount of resources consumed and waste left behind. According to the Grassroots Recycling Network, the movement’s goal is to maximize recycling while minimizing waste and reducing consumption.

It has very little to do with me and more to do with the timing and intensity of grassroots enthusiasm, i think Atlanta can become -- and Georgia can become -- an economic powerhouse. I think that people here want access to more affordable health care choices. And I think people here are concerned that we're losing sight of those values.

The primaries are a totally different animal, the things that got Trump to where he is [are] not necessarily the things he'll need to continue….He is not used to the organizational style of a political campaign, the accoutrements of a campaign from the grassroots up. Not only can you rely on earned media; you must rely on paid media, staffing, advertising.

I don't think anyone was surprised that discrimination happens, what was interesting was that when you give grassroots organisations the tools to go back to their communities and say what's going on, document it... they can identify problems they know are happening in the communities and then come back and tell their governments about it.

Last night when our political team saw the CNN post saying Dr. Carson was not carrying on to New Hampshire and South Carolina, our campaign updated the grassroots leaders just as we would with any breaking news story. That's fair game, what the team should have done is send around the follow-up statement from the Carson campaign clarifying that he was indeed staying in the race when that came out. That was a mistake from our end, and for that I apologize to Dr. Carson.
