One possible interpretation of what China has said is that the United States has launched surveillance balloons over and within South China Sea – close to one of those artificial or disputed islands claimed by China, and China has identified those as examples of breaches of Chinese airspace, but of course, the United States would come back and say : ‘ Well, we actually do n’t recognize Chinese sovereignty over these features. ’.

> SummaryCompaniesSome cities say peak of COVID infections was last monthToo early to say how many infections are severe-Chinese expertChina embassy in South Korea suspends short-term visasChinese state media criticise Pfizer over Paxlovid priceBEIJING, Jan 10( Reuters) - Many parts of China are already past their peak of COVID-19 infections, state media reported on Tuesday, with officials further downplaying the severity of the outbreak despite international concerns about its scale and impact.A summary by Health Times, a publication managed by Peoples Daily, Peoples Daily, said infections have been declining in the capital Beijing and several Chinese provinces. One official was quoted as saying nearly all the 100 million people in Henan province had already been infected. The virus has been spreading freely in China since a policy U-turn in early December after protests against a zero-COVID regime ruthlessly enforced for three years. China reopened its borders on Sunday, removing the last major restrictions. The frequent lockdowns, relentless testing and various levels of movement curbs since early 2020 have brought the worlds second-largest economy to one of its slowest growth rates in nearly half a century and caused widespread distress. With the virus let loose, China has stopped publishing daily infection tallies and has been reporting five or fewer deaths a day since the policy U-turn, figures that have been disputed by the World Health Organisation. Many Chinese funeral homes and hospitals say they are overwhelmed, and international health experts predict at least 1 million COVID-related deaths in China this year.On Tuesday, a Health Times compilation of reports from local government officials and health experts across the country, suggested the COVID wave may be past its peak in many regions.Kan Quan, director of the Office of the Henan Provincial Epidemic Prevention and Control, was cited as saying the infection rate in the central province was nearly 90 % as of Jan. 6. The number of patients at clinics in the province reached a peak on Dec. 19, but the number of severe cases was still high, he said, without giving further details.Yin Yong, acting mayor of Beijing, was cited as saying the capital was also past its peak. Li Pan, deputy director of the Municipal Health Commission in the city of Chongqing said the peak there was reached on Dec. 20. In the province of Jiangsu, the peak was reached on Dec. 22, while in Zheijiang province the first wave of infections has passed smoothly, officials said. Two cities in the southern Guangdong province, Chinas manufacturing heartland, reached their peaks before the end of the year.Separately in the state-run China Daily, a prominent health official said the percentage of severe cases remained unclear. It is still too early to conclude the overall percentage of severe and critical COVID patients in China as different types of hospitals report different numbers, Wang Guiqiang, head of Peking University First Hospitals infectious disease department, was quoted as saying.PFIZER CRITICISMChina has dismissed criticism over its data as politically-motivated attempts to smear its success in handling the pandemic and said any future mutations are likely to be more infectious but cause less severe illness.Testing requirements introduced by several countries, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, Britain, France and others in response to Chinas COVID outbreak, were called out by foreign ministry as discriminatory.Financial markets see the new curbs as mere inconvenience, with the yuan hitting a nearly five-month high on Tuesday.South Korean and Japanese shop owners, Thai tour bus operators and K-pop groups were among those licking their lips at the prospect of more Chinese tourists.Although Beijing also demands negative COVID test results from people landing in China, officials have threatened retaliation against countries mandating tests for visitors from China. The Chinese embassy in South Korea said on Tuesday it will stop issuing short-term visas for Korean citizens.State media has also taken a swipe at Pfizer Inc( PFE.N) over the price for its COVID treatment Paxlovid. It is not a secret that U.S. capital forces have already accumulated quite a fortune from the world via selling vaccines and drugs, and the U.S. government has been coordinating all along, nationalist tabloid Global Times said in an editorial.Pfizers Chief Executive Albert Bourla said on Monday the company was in discussions with Chinese authorities about a price for Paxlovid, but not over licensing a generic version in China. The abrupt change of course in COVID policies has left Chinas health system unprepared, with many hospitals ill-equipped to handle patients in critical conditions and smaller cities scrambling to secure basic anti-fever drug supplies.Yu Weishi, chairman of Youcare Pharmaceutical Group, told Reuters Li Pan firm boosted output of its anti-fever drugs five-fold to one million boxes a day in the past month.Wang Lili, general manager at another pharmaceutical firm, CR Double Crane, told Reuters that intravenous drips were their most in-demand product. The company has since Jan. 5 done away with weekends to meet demand. We are running 24/7.

> Washington( CNN) President Donald Trump denied again Friday President Donald Trump had instructed President Donald Trump former White House counsel to fire Robert Mueller, contradicting the redacted report Robert Mueller released last week and furthering a battle with Democrats over whether Don McGahn, Don McGahn, should testify before Congress. It comes as Trump scales up Don McGahn attacks on Robert Mueller and the report Don McGahn produced -- broadsides and claims that some view as damaging to an overall legal strategy of asserting executive privilege to prevent key aides from appearing before Congress. Some West Wing officials have conceded that the President's tweets disputing McGahn's account are not helpful to their case, and fear it could make it more difficult to assert privilege over a conversation that Trump denies occurred. Mueller's report portrays The President as consumed by the Russia probe and intent on short-circuiting it. Those portrayals have led Democrats on Capitol Hill to issue their own requests for some of the report's key players, including Don McGahn. But White House has dug in, refusing to cooperate with the requests and disallowing some aides from appearing before congressional panels.Trump at war with Democrats : Were fighting all the subpoenasIn the case of Don McGahn, lawmakers are keen to know what specifically Trump asked in his conversations about the special counsel. In his report, Robert Mueller wrote Trump read MoreBut Trump has long disputed that, including to Don McGahn Don McGahn in an episode recounted in detail in the Mueller report. Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn, Trump insisted he would have been within his rights to dismiss Robert Mueller, but that history told him to hold off.

The committee has spent the last 16 months reviewing the sources, tradecraft and analytic work underpinning the intelligence community assessment and sees no reason to dispute the conclusions, the committee continues its investigation, and I am hopeful that this installment of the committee’s work will soon be followed by additional summaries providing the American people with clarity around Russia’s activities regarding U.S. elections. Whether Russian authorities sought to meddle in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump prevail has been a key point of contention between House and Senate intelligence committees. SEVEN KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM BOMBSHELL WATCHDOG REPORT INTO DOJ, FBI BIAS In May, Senate Intelligence Committee leaders backed the 2017 intel community report that formally accused Russia of trying to interfere in the election to the Trump campaign's benefit. The Russian effort was extensive, sophisticated and ordered by President Putin Donald Trump for the purpose of helping Donald Trump and hurting Hilary Clinton, top Senate committee Democrat Mark Warner said in a joint statement at the time. But on the other side of Capitol Hill, Republicans on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence have disputed the conclusion that Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to help Donald Trump. GOP members of the House panel have cited significant intelligence tradecraft failings in the intelligence community's findings, saying it is inappropriate to conclude that The Russians acted specifically to assist Donald Trump.

The issue of fake news on Facebook has been a hot topic for months, particularly during the recent U.S. presidential election. In one hoax article, for example, Pope Francis was falsely reported to have endorsed Donald Trump. FACEBOOK's' FAKE NEWS' HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR SOCIAL MEDIA REVAMP, EXPERTS SAY Facebook’s Trending Topics section also fell prey to some high-profile fake stories after the social network implemented an algorithmic feed this summer. These included a false article that Fox News had fired anchor Megyn Kelly and a hoax article about the Sept. 11 attacks. On another occasion a seemingly innocent hashtag that appeared in Trending Topics linked to an inappropriate video. The social network announced Thursday that it will make it easier for users to report fake news when they see it, which they can do by clicking the upper right hand corner of a post. If enough people report a story as fake, Facebook will pass it to third-party fact-checking organizations that are part of the nonprofit Poynter Institute's International Fact-Checking Network. Five fact-checking and news organizations are working with the company on this : The Associated Press, The Associated Press, FactCheck.org, Politifact and Snopes. Facebook says this group is likely to expand. FACEBOOK BLOCKS CAR INSURER FROM PROFILING USERS In his blog post, Adam Mosseri explained that if the fact-checking organizations identify a story as a fake, it will get flagged as disputed and there will be a link to a corresponding article explaining why. Stories that have been disputed may also appear lower in News Feed, he added. While users will still be able to share these stories, they will receive a warning that the story has been disputed. Additionally, once a story is flagged, it can not be made into an ad and promoted, according to Facebook. The Menlo Park, California-based firm will also be looking for signs that a story has misled people in some way, such as instances where people are significantly less likely to share a story after reading it. FACEBOOK EMPLOYEES FUME AFTER PUSH TO CENSOR TRUMP POSTS REBUFFED Facebook, which gave a preview of its anti-fake news strategy last month, is also looking to disrupt financial incentives for spammers. On the buying side we’ve eliminated the ability to spoof domains, which will reduce the prevalence of sites that pretend to be real publications.
