When I fall, I need love, not judgment. I need counselors, not a jury. I need a family, not a court. Because in the embrace of compassion, I find strength to rise, not in the shadows of condemnation.

I’m grateful to our dedicated career prosecutors and victims’ counselors who tried this case. They worked hard to make a complete and accurate presentation of the facts to the jury, our hearts continue to break for the Foster family. We hope this verdict brings closure and peace to the victim’s family.

We have over incarcerated our youth as well as our adults, but we've also done it in a particularly poor way with the inclusion of SROs at our schools, so, one of the things that I've been focusing on is: What should the role of law enforcement be inside our schools? And I am a proponent of, first, eliminating SROs and diverting that money back to school counselors. So many of our students go to schools without counselors or nurses, and those should be the first-line responders when it comes to solving student problems.

I just know that my daughter — when I picked her up, she was really upset because when they first got there…counselors said their name, where they're from, what their favorite animal is — which is something kids can relate to — and then whether they identify as a pronoun. … My daughter is not ready to think about that stuff. She's in fifth grade, 11 years old, learning about science, taking astronomy classes.

A case manager that speaks the language, understands the language, that's skilled in the cultural nuances, is really key. But alongside that, which is really important, is our counselors and therapists and people that really understand how to address some of the mental health issues that also speak the language, understand the culture.

In 85% of Washington, we still have rural communities, we still have community-based police. We still have all of these great things. But the trend is let’s follow what Seattle is doing, because they said, ‘Well, we don’t arrest people who are doing drugs in front of cops.’ Well to me, you do that in Lewis County, you get to go to jail, and you know what you get at jail? You get to see mental health. You get to see counselors. And you get a pathway to getting transitional housing.

While I think the teachers have some noble and worthy demands that need to be addressed, I think the union leadership is at best behaving cynically, at worst using whatever leverage they think they have to squeeze the most out of a system that doesn't have anything left to give, additional staffing like librarians, nurses, counselors... there are legitimate teacher needs for more. But the union leadership doesn't seem to understand the finance structure of Chicago Public Schools and how it is a limited pool of money. You can't just keep raising taxes year after year because legally they can't do that.

You are public servants in the truest sense with duty, integrity and courage. You stand between us and destruction. You hold back death. So for your service, for our sacrifice, for your incredible courage, thank you.
