I believe the constitutional purpose of impeachment is to remove a president from office, not to punish a person after Senate GOP leaders have left office, no consideration was given to impeach President Nixon when he left office in 1974. The Constitution hasn't changed and the Congress should not set a new, destructive precedent.

This argument has been roundly debunked from constitutional scholars from the left, right and center, it defies precedent, historic practice and basic common sense. It makes no sense whatsoever that a president or any official could commit a heinous crime against our country and then defeat Congress' impeachment powers by simply resigning.

There are actions that, while not strictly speaking illegal, are violations of the responsibilities that someone undertakes when he enters into a particular office of trust and confidence, the article of impeachment should be read -this is my bottom line -as accusing the president of violating his oath of office by doing what he did. That’s a constitutional standard, but not necessarily a legal standard.
