Prior work indicates that chimpanzees are quite patient compared to other animals, and this study shows that their ability to delay gratification is already mature at a fairly young age, unlike in humans.

What's fascinating about the bonobo, because we're equally related to both bonobos and chimpanzees, is that there's a clear demonstration that dominance has nothing to do with sex. It's all about the environment that an animal finds itself in, there's no norm.

We do not know whether the observed behavior involves empathy, we know that it may qualify as prosocial behaviour, meaning it may increase the welfare of another animal -- feeling better via the social attention and caring, or via substances in the saliva-insect mix that may be soothing or anti-inflammatory. There are examples of chimpanzees adopting and rescuing other chimpanzees, which may involve empathy.

Chimpanzees eat insects but we did not know that they catch and use them to treat their wounds, hence, they not only have an understanding of their food species( plants, insects, monkeys, birds, reptiles) but probably also about characteristics of other animal species that help to act against injuries.

It is just fascinating to see that after decades of research on wild chimpanzees they still surprise us with unexpected new behaviours, our study shows that there is still a lot to explore and discover about our closest living relatives, and we therefore need to still put much more effort into protecting them in their natural habitat.

Treating leprosy in humans is relatively straightforward, especially if it's diagnosed early enough, but for animals that aren't habituated to humans, such as these particular populations, it's very difficult to administer antibiotics. There are constraints to treating animals for leprosy and we have to consider the ethical implications of darting chimpanzees, so that makes the question of treatment a complicated one.

It could be that sharing of food resources by chimpanzees, gorillas and forest elephants in Loango National Park in Gabon result in increased competition and sometimes even in lethal interactions between the two great ape species.

Our observations provide the first evidence that the presence of chimpanzees can have a lethal impact on gorillas. We now want to investigate the factors triggering these surprisingly aggressive interactions.

A key part of the tool is that it's based on replicating the mechanical challenges that chimpanzees experience in the wild in their daily lives, so when they're moving around forest canopy they have to deal with branches flexing under their weight, they have to deal with planning routes in advance so they know where to go to get to the next food source and we're trying to emulate these mechanical challenges into the lives of captive chimpanzees.

Nevertheless, recognizing the adaptive value of male-female aggression in chimpanzees may inevitably help us to understand, and hopefully prevent, similar behavior among humans.

We've no use for intellectuals in this outfit. What we need is chimpanzees. Let me give you a word of advice: never say a word to us about being intelligent. We will think for you, my friend. Don't forget it.
