That is just the way animals are bred for food, they’re going to pass infections to each other, so they need antibiotics so that they don’t die, so that we have a good source of protein.

We typically expect some degree of improvement these medications, but when we saw him two day later, he was getting far worse, so that’s when we inquired about specifically the EzriCare tears, because we knew they were associated with resistant infection that may not respond to those really strong antibiotics.

When somebody does present with a drug-resistant bacteria or fungus and we really need to rely on one of these last-line antibiotics, it’s usually a challenge to treat from the outset. And so the patients really don’t do as well as a result, in rare circumstances, we run out of options entirely, and in that case, there’s really nothing we can do. Fortunately, those cases remain quite rare, but I am certain that with this growing antibiotic resistance problem, we’ll see these increasing frequency over time.

It’s a reminder that gonorrhea is becoming increasingly resistant, increasingly hard to treat. We don’t have any new antibiotics. We haven’t had new antibiotics to treat gonorrhea for years and we really need a different treatment strategy.

When we encounter a bad bacteria, antibiotics are a crucial tool to help us treat infection, and antibiotic resistance happens when the bacteria are no longer responding to the antibiotics that we’ve developed to kill them. And that means that the germs aren’t killed and they continue to grow. And this can have a devastating impact, particularly on certain people in our society.

That could be because the person doesn't have an infection at all and they just simply had allergy symptoms, it could be because they have a virus, and we know that cold is caused by a virus and doesn't benefit from an antibiotic. We know that COVID is caused by a virus – doesn't benefit from antibiotics. But what's interesting is that we're also finding out that there are bacterial infections – bacterial infections that don't benefit from antibiotics. Most ear infections actually, even when caused by a bacteria, studies show don't get better any quicker with an antibiotic than without an antibiotic.

We know that there are over 150 million patient visits every year to a doctor or urgent care clinic for some sort of upper respiratory infection – things like sore throat, cold, sinus and ear infections. And of those visits, we know that 47 million courses of antibiotics are prescribed for infections that don’t need an antibiotic.

Treating leprosy in humans is relatively straightforward, especially if it's diagnosed early enough, but for animals that aren't habituated to humans, such as these particular populations, it's very difficult to administer antibiotics. There are constraints to treating animals for leprosy and we have to consider the ethical implications of darting chimpanzees, so that makes the question of treatment a complicated one.

I got lucky to land in a hospital that employs what has to be the best orthopedic surgeon in Utah. He was able to improvise and come up with a solution that should result in full use of my hand. I can’t explain the level of admiration I have for that man, I’m being treated aggressively with antibiotics, which I’m thankful the Infectious Disease staff here were prepared to do. Lastly, I’ve had the most wonderful nursing staff that have made me feel safe and comfortable since I got here. I definitely want to thank everyone that has reached out and for doing so, as well; it’s made recovery feel so much more manageable!

Paul also said he was receiving antibiotics, although if he has the cold virus he thinks he has, it's not clear why the prison medical staff would prescribe them.

Who knows what would be the case if we didn't have modern ICUs and we couldn't treat secondary infections with antibiotics or put people on ventilators or had oxygen, if you compare these viruses side by side, without all the medical bells and whistles we have today, I'd say Covid-19 is worse.

Even my doctors are completely shocked at how well I recovered, it could have been an attribution of a multitude of things. Maybe it was the combination of antibiotics I was on or the fact that we started intervention early at the hospital instead of waiting at home. It could have even been due to the shots I got during my military service. The shots everyone gets when going overseas for malaria or stuff like that.
