This is not a cop found guilty of murder for using his knee to pin down a person for nine minutes as he gasped for air, this is not a cop found guilty of manslaughter for intentionally drawing his firearm and shooting across his partner to kill an unarmed woman as she approached his car. This is a cop who made a tragic mistake. She drew her firearm thinking it was a Taser, and ended up killing a young man.

I think I looked at that video over 20 times, today, I still cannot explain why that officer went to his Taser. We train officers every year. Everyone at this police department is trained on de-escalation.

I’m becoming less and less enamored with Taser technology, there are many failures, but increasingly, officers are so afraid to use their firearm that they are using Tasers and other less-than-lethal means when they should be shooting.

We were trying to keep him from driving away. It just went chaotic. And then I remember yelling, 'Taser, Taser, Taser.'.

I went around Officer Luckey as they're trying to get back in the door. I'm between the door and Officer Luckey ... and the driver's getting into the car ... They're still struggling. And I can see Sgt. Johnson and the driver struggling over the gearshift because I can see Johnson's hand, and then I can see his face ... He had a look of fear on his face, we were trying to keep him from driving away. It just went chaotic. And then I remember yelling, 'Taser, Taser, Taser.'.

The Glock trigger is curved, the Taser trigger is flat with some serrations cut into The Taser trigger. The Taser has an external, I guess,' on'( and)' off' switch safety. The Glock does not.

If it does work, his body locks up. I don't know how that helps, if you look at video and how close, she's right inside the open door, at the edge, and those probes won't spread far enough to achieve neuromuscular incapacitation and that's the goal. If you achieved it, he'd be locked up in that seat. It's hard to manipulate him. It's confusing, tactically, what the end goal was with the Taser.

I’m sure he did have a Taser, our officers are issued Taser, but in those situations – that’s a lethal situation, he deescalated by retreating, he moved backwards, again ordering the individual to drop the weapon… You can’t use a less lethal if someone is attacking you with a knife.

While we appreciate that the district attorney is pursuing justice for Daunte, no conviction can give the Wright family their loved one back. This was no accident. This was an intentional, deliberate, and unlawful use of force. Driving while Black continues to result in a death sentence, a 26-year veteran of the force knows the difference between a taser and a firearm. Kim Potter executed Daunte for what amounts to no more than a minor traffic infraction and a misdemeanor warrant.

As you can hear, the officer, while struggling with Mr. Wright yells ‘Taser! Taser!’ several times. That is part of the officer’s training prior to deploying a Taser, which is a less lethal device, as I watch the video and listen to the officer’s commands, it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their Taser, but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet.

As I watched the video and listened to the officer's commands, it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their Taser, but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet, this appears to me, from what I've viewed and the officer's reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Katie Wright.

Whether it is a Taser, pepper spray, baton... there's been this gap created by the courts requiring that a higher level of force be used at the appropriate time, this tool fits perfectly into that gap giving the officers another option to use before having to use that high level of force to end that conversation very early, very safely.
