The one thing we do know for sure is when you’re collecting a sample off of a human being, you want to go where the most scent is produced. That is the head, the pits, the groin and the feet. Given those options, I went with feet, we collected some socks from people willing to donate socks, and we taught the dogs, by smelling the socks, which ones were the Covid socks and they picked it up very quickly.

I think you have a subset of patients who are being screened earlier with colonoscopies; you have advancing technology where we can potentially detect tumor cell DNA in the stool sample, which is leading to earlier diagnosis. And sometimes that effect will skew statistics and make it look like the incidence is really on the rise, but deeper analysis shows you that part of that is due to earlier detection and more screening, so that could be one facet of the equation.

This is our first glimpse back this far, so it’s important that we keep an open mind about what we are seeing, while the data indicates they are likely galaxies, I think there is a real possibility that a few of these objects turn out to be obscured supermassive black holes. Regardless, the amount of mass we discovered means that the known mass in stars at this period of our universe is up to 100 times greater than we had previously thought. Even if we cut the sample in half, this is still an astounding change.

Seeing our first sample on the ground is a great capstone to our prime mission period, which ends on Jan. 6, it’s a nice alignment that, just as we’re starting our cache, we’re also closing this first chapter of the mission.

In the distant past, the sand, mud, and salts that now make up the Wildcat Ridge sample were deposited under conditions where life could potentially have thrived, the fact the organic matter was found in such a sedimentary rock -- known for preserving fossils of ancient life here on Earth -- is important. However, as capable as our instruments aboard Perseverance are, further conclusions regarding what is contained in the Wildcat Ridge sample will have to wait until it's returned to Earth for in-depth study as part of the agency's Mars Sample Return campaign.

The delta, with its diverse sedimentary rocks, contrasts beautifully with the igneous rocks -- formed from crystallization of magma -- discovered on the crater floor, this juxtaposition provides us with a rich understanding of the geologic history after the crater formed and a diverse sample suite. For example, we found a sandstone that carries grains and rock fragments created far from Jezero Crater.

Our study is by far the largest investigation of the topic, it uses a general population sample, and it controls for more confounds than before. As such, it provides overwhelmingly more evidence than any previous investigations and gets us closer to settling the debate.

It's hard to imagine something more hostile to life than an ultra-acidic volcanic lake with frequent eruptions, the low biodiversity coupled with numerous adaptations and metabolisms in our sample suggests the lake hosts highly specialized microbes for this kind of environment.

We would like to characterize how life reclaims this environment, a main hypothesis from our study is that life in Costa Rica Poás volcano is able to survive on the fringes during these extreme environments. So we'd love to sample not only the crater lake but the shore line, connected groundwater systems, and anywhere where life might be harbored nearby.

A good geology student will tell you that such a texture indicates the rock formed when crystals grew and settled in a slowly cooling magma -- for example a thick lava flow, lava lake, or magma chamber, the rock was then altered by water several times, making it a treasure trove that will allow future scientists to date events in Jezero Crater, better understand the period in which water was more common on Jezero Crater surface, and reveal the early history of the planet. Mars Sample Return is going to have great stuff to choose from.

Pooled testing can be one good option if schools decide to do routing surveillance testing. The benefits are that the tests can be batched and run together, decreasing time to getting The Results and potentially decreasing cost of testing, the major drawback is that pooled testing is best used in low prevalence settings, because if there is a positive pool then all of the individual samples in that' batch' have to be disaggregated and tested individually to identify the actual positive sample or samples.
