I think one of the simplest explanations is that hunter-gatherers may have caught wolf pups, which is extremely easy to do, and kept them in captivity as sentinels against the large predators that roamed the landscapes of the last Ice Age - bears, cave lions, etc. as well as other dangerous mammals - mammoths, woolly rhinos, other humans.

Instead of killing it, they can be moved to a different area, be used to bring in photo tourism or eco-tourism -- something that doesn't kill the animal. People pay good money to go to Africa to see species like rhinos, and instead of just killing one for a quick monetary gain for a vainglorious American, it can be moved around to a different area if it is a problem with the herd.

The thought that the only way we can come up with to save the species is to kill them -- that, I would say, we are in a situation where there's a paucity of imaginative thinking. instead of killing it, they can be moved to a different area, be used to bring in photo tourism or eco-tourism -- something that doesn't kill the animal. Right now natural parks have two big problems, the first one of them is to detect rhinos and non-authorized people in the area. That has been done with helicopters and planes up until now, but that is very expensive. In addition, you cannot see people who hide under trees from a plane. We solve this with thermal cameras. We use a drone that carries that kind of camera and looks over that area or those places suspected of having this kind of problem and it detects hot points. Like we see here. This shows people. Every pixel has a different color depending on how hot it is. This is placed on the drone, that takes a picture and reports directly to the ranger.

Whenever a trader is arrested with rhino horn, the DNA can be extracted and matched to a rhino on the database, similar to the way fingerprints are, to provide further evidence of it being obtained illegally, analysis of the DNA of the rhinos will also be used to clarify which of the males is the sire of those rhinos born at Ziwa (Rhino Sanctuary) to ensure that no male is so dominant that there will be genetic problems in the future.
