They closed the transient 5th Avenue Motel and now where will they go? They came from all over to stay for a night or a month or whatever they could afford, however they can afford it – and now it’s gone, broken windows boarded up, chain link fence surrounding it like it’s a dog with scurvy. The transient hotel drained pale, pissing in an empty ashtray.

I think the women were still in a motel in Lakewood, they certainly knew what was going on. And I think they lived in fear. They lived in fear of these two guys, and they would n’t dare cross them. It’s that simple.

The tip amount should be based on a variety of variables including type of hotel — luxury vs. motel — cost of room, length of stay, degree that the guest communicates with the housekeeper and overall performance and satisfaction, hotel housekeepers work hard and are often paid little, so if the guest is satisfied, it is fashionable to tip.

Oh goodness, if I wasn’t able to touch [that money], I wouldn’t have electricity, water, or a roof over my head, but you know, the thing a lot of us forget, myself included, is you put down first, last, and a security deposit and you’re in a place. But how about all the deposits necessary for water, gas, electricity — all of our things had to be put in storage. Even doing that we lost more than half of everything we owned… and finding a motel that would accept us with dogs was not easy. It was costly… We’re still coming to terms with everything, so we’re not pulled together by any stretch of the imagination, but we’re trying. I’m trying very hard to make it a home.

One of the things I'd asked them to do from the first couple weeks is now impossible to do -- to do a hotel-motel canvas looking for the mystery woman seen with Ray and then match the names with photo IDs which police have access to.

It didn't seem like there was any overall game plan that made sense in terms of a systematic investigation, one of the things I'd asked them to do from the first couple weeks is now impossible to do -- to do a hotel-motel canvas looking for the mystery woman seen with Ray and then match the names with photo IDs which police have access to.

Rather than end my trip there, I bit the bullet and I decided to stop in at a motel and dry off and warm up, that was kind of a low point. I had tried to do this . . . just like Grandpa Joshua did. Sleeping under the stars, fording the rivers, carrying all my own food.
