Minneapolis had their third-snowiest winter on record, so a lot of it was sitting around waiting to melt, we didn’t really add a ton of heavy rain on top of the snowpack while that snow was melting, so that kind of allowed it to progress fairly orderly, but we’re going to have some minor flooding in a lot of rivers.

I do believe reforms and training can prevent this, but the number one deterrent to this is when police officers around the country see what's going to happen to them when they participate in behavior such as this, and so these individuals were fired. These individuals were charged appropriately for their actions, similarly, what we saw happen in Minneapolis with Derek Chauvin and his actions, and officers around the country seeing that this type of behavior is not going to be tolerated by law enforcement. It's not going to be tolerated by the communities that they serve.

Violent-crime increase — call it Ferguson Effect 2.0 or the Minneapolis Effect — has come on with a speed and magnitude that make Ferguson 1.0 seem tranquil, george Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police in late May was justly condemned — but the event has now spurred an outpouring of contempt against the pillars of law and order that has no precedent in American history.

I think we need to call this out for what it is: it’s a grift, while there are many good people who associate themselves as BLM activists, the people at the top of the organization couldn’t care less. While the people of Minneapolis, the epicenter of the George Floyd riots, struggle with homelessness, spiking crime, and the nation's largest achievement gap for Black kids, the people sitting at the top of BLM live in multi-million dollar mansions, it’s sickening.

Following the tragic death of Mr. Floyd in Minneapolis, Detroit never burned and always our police officers mattered. Our rules mattered, following policy mattered. And that starts with me leading from the front. Many politicians don’t get that. None of this, 'rule for thee, none for me.’.

Not only were Chauvin and the City of Minneapolis held accountable, but cities and states across the country have passed meaningful reforms, including restrictions on chokeholds and better training and protocols, we need this sentence to usher in a new era of accountability that transforms how Black people are treated by police. To achieve that – real, lasting change in police departments from coast to coast – we need the U.S. Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act without further delay.
