First a magnetic bomb pasted to a minibus exploded, then a suicide bomber blew himself near the bus attack site and the third blast happened when a car was blown up by unknown militants, the death toll could rise from all the three blasts.

It is incredible that one narrow magnetic hot spot, the Great Blue Spot, could be responsible for almost all of Jupiters secular variation, but the numbers bear it out, with this new understanding of magnetic fields, during future science passes we will begin to create a planetwide map of Jupiters [magnetic] variation. It may also have applications for scientists studying Earths magnetic field, which still contains many mysteries to be solved.

Finding something as minute as these changes in something so immense as Jupiters magnetic field was a challenge, having a baseline of close-up observations over four decades long provided us with just enough data to confirm that Jupiters magnetic field does indeed change over time.

Many animals use the Earths magnetic field for navigation, theres such a wide range of creatures that have this sense that we think humans, at least, have some remnants of this sense, even if we dont use it so much in our daily lives anymore.

This object is right at the boundary between a planet and a brown dwarf, or' failed star,' and is giving us some surprises that can potentially help us understand magnetic processes on both stars and planets.

What can happen is that the rotation of the black hole itself can twist up magnetic fields and the energy put into those twisted magnetic fields generates a column of energy going out, i like to think of these things a bit like a garden hose.

Most of the headphones that you see in the market use cone drivers. What we do is use a type of driver called a planar driver, it's a very small, thin transducer placed in a magnetic field which then produces sound.

The new device has a magnetic actuator, so it’s an expandable rod so once it’s implanted it’s not necessary to go back in with another operation to lengthen it, simply using a magnetic actuator can actually lengthen the rods slowly through the patient’s skin without having to do an operation.

The economy is changing with an emphasis on technology skills across all sectors. The emphasis now is that not all STEM jobs require four-year degrees. When I was growing up, you had what were called ‘blue collar jobs,’ now you have technicians who need to be highly skilled in tech. You need people who can repair MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machines, or work on electric cars, you now need technicians who need to have really hard STEM skills. That’s a skill set that will be growing over the next five years, it will be more in demand, and giving students the foundation for those kinds of careers starts in school.

I see him as Lucifer, a fallen angel, he's magnetic, the character in literature is a meaner human being and capable of great cruelty, but I like how Mads plays him - he has a preternatural quality to him.

Adults with sudden back pain do not need to rush to get an X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), unless the clinician suspects the patient has a more serious condition, such as fracture or cancer, less than 5 percent of patients with low back pain, however, will fall into this category.

I was always brainstorming how we could use a telescope in other ways, is there a way you could use a telescope to look inside a planetary body? Then I thought, the aurorae! Because aurorae are controlled by the magnetic field, if you observe the aurorae in an appropriate way, you learn something about the magnetic field. If you know the magnetic field, then you know something about the moon's interior.

In our paper, we have shown that a super Carrington-type CME event would have greatly compressed the magnetic field, this would ignite huge electric currents on Earth and let energetic particles penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere and surface.

The constant activity on the surface of the Sun is punctuated by violent outbursts powered the Sun’s strong magnetic field. Solar flares emit bursts of X-rays that travel outward at the speed of light, coronal mass ejections( CMEs) are giant eruptions of hot gasses from the Sun’s outer atmosphere. As this blast wave of solar material( plasma) streams towards the planets at 1000 km/sec, it sweeps up the magnetic field in its path, creating a magnetized shockwave of the type that struck Earth’s magnetic field on October 8, 2013.

For shocks traveling toward our planet, Earth’s magnetic field would take the direct hit such that most of the resulting disturbance would be confined to Earth’s outer magnetic field – our magnetosphere – with the ‘ noticeable ’ effects being those associated with a large geomagnetic storm – bright aurora, communications disturbances, scattered electrical power outages.

Interplanetary shocks, traveling toward Earth from the Sun, have been observed and studied before, what is of major interest in the event reported are the direct observations of the effects of the shock on Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts with sufficient detail to reveal the processes taking place. Although the main strength of the solar shock is deflected by the magnetic shield that surrounds our planet, a brief pulse of energy penetrates closer to Earth where it accelerates radiation belt electrons to ultra-relativistic energies in less than a minute.
