We found the optimal angle is about 40 degrees off the ground. Once Dillon Ruble’re aiming that high, Dillon Ruble throw as hard as possible. That gives us our best distance, it took simulations to figure that out. I did n’t think we could get useful data from a simulation on a paper airplane. Turns out, we could.

Prestwick is a really terrible place to store an airplane, because it’s cold and wet and rainy and moist, not somewhere you would plan to keep them for a long time. Maybe they were just planning to fix them, but then the other events happened.

The important thing, however, was to create a way to refuel, there had been a lot of experiments up to this point with aerial refueling, but there really was no way to modify a Cessna 172 to be refueled in midair. So they set up an extra tank that could be filled from a truck on the ground. When they needed to refuel, they would come down and fly very low and just above stall speed, then the truck came along and winched up a hose and then used a pump to transfer the fuel into the airplane. It really was a dramatic show of airmanship, because they had to do it at night sometimes and that required some precision flying.

It was a relatively new design, it’s a roomy four-seater airplane and it was known for being reliable and fairly easy to fly – something you do n’t have to pay attention to every moment. And when you’re doing long duration, you want an airplane that’s just going to kind of hum along there.

It's like fixing the airplane while you're still flying. You have to be very careful how you fix it so that you stay flying, it's the same thing as we're trying to produce water. All that water demand needs to continue to occur and every time we have to do some maintenance then we have to offset some of that.

The first step would be to try these in a commuter market or charter market, then eventually, if that works well, you're going to have passenger jets. For that we need Boeing or Airbus to come out with a actual electric airplane. I would see that in about 10 years.

I would describe the experience as kind of extreme turbulence on an airplane but louder, and there was kind of a lot of smoke smell. The first thought I really had when I woke up was,' Oh my God we're derailing,' it was probably 10 or 15 seconds of rocking back and forth and tons of noise, and then we came to a stop. Really we didn't know what was going on for a couple of minutes.
