    A ziggurat is a type of massive structure built in ancient Mesopotamia, which has the form of a terraced compound of successively receding stories or levels. It was usually a pyramidal tower consisting of a lofty pyramidal structure built in successive stages with outside staircases and a shrine at the top. It was often part of a temple complex and used for religious practices and ceremonies.
