  1. Womanist theology

Womanist theology is a religious conceptual framework which reconsiders and revises the traditions, practices, scriptures, and biblical interpretation with a special lens to empower and liberate African American women in America. Womanist theology associates with and departs from Feminist theology and Black theology specifically because it integrates the perspectives and experiences of African American and other women of color. The former's lack of attention to the everyday realities of women of color and the latter's lack of understanding of the full dimension of liberation from the unique oppressions of Black women require bringing them together in Womanist Theology. The goals of womanist theology include interrogating the social construction of black womanhood in relation to the Black community and to assume a liberatory perspective so that African American women can live emboldened lives within the African American community and within the larger society. Some of its tasks are excavating the life stories of poor women of African descent in the church and to understanding the "languages" of black women. It is strongly associated with Black feminism. Womanist theology is not only for African women; it attempts to embrace women of color all over the world.

As an African American woman, I was born and lived in the southern state of North Carolina during a time when segregation was the way of life. Womanist theology for me is stepping out and stepping up to the wide open world taking ownership of my voice.

One cliche' comes to my mind, "If you don't use it, you lose it." I am blessed to have a voice. For many generations, my people have been fearful in expression of self and who we are, what we think, how we feel about events, world issues, and life in general. Speaking for my own self and taking ownership of expressing my views and opinions was not something I freely did.

Remain quiet was the place I stayed because I was scared to open my mouth. My thoughts became my own worse enemies. I let them keep me imprisioned. Even babies have to start somewhere. If they stop at the first gurgle, then we all would be silent. This day, I say "speak voice!"

GOD is raising me up, teaching me how to go out into the deep and know that HE has me in the palm of HIS hand. HE orchestates situations in my life, places me in various places, and positions, allows me to sit under the leadership and tuteledge of people who are there to stretch me, and without their permission, HE causes them to help in my development and growth.

I would like to give thanks for having had such people in my life during grad school who shook my foundation, and helped me allow myself the courage to get out of the boat. First, I have to give much credit to Dr. Haynes, my spiritual formation professor who taught me the importance of being real.

I am so very grateful to Dr. Annie Tinsley for the introduction to post-modernism, and black theology. Thank you Dr. Tinsley for giving me the strength to recognize we, as a people have our own theology, and it can and should be expressed. Your humble spirit was a pleasant change. The gift you have to push others to become a better self is appreciated.

Dr. Cheryl Kirk-Duggan, whoa! Thank GOD for grace, mercy and strength to get it done. When people feel overloaded, oftentimes we find ourselves developing a bond with those enduring the same. Thank you kindly for opening my mind to a consciencousness of using inclusive language, and to an awareness of how we have close-minded areas we live in which we feel should be reality to all.

Even those professors who broke my spirit, I was still stretched and blessed. I at times took on the spirit of The Apostle Paul as I learned how to be abased, and how to abound. I am grateful to GOD for letting me know that HE has already validated me. I am who HE says that I am. I can do what HE says I can do. Because HE is, I am!
