Wikipedia
willy-willy
A dust devil is a strong, well-formed, and relatively short-lived whirlwind. Its size ranges from small (half a metre wide and a few metres tall) to large (more than 10 m wide and more than 1 km tall). The primary vertical motion is upward. Dust devils are usually harmless, but can on rare occasions grow large enough to pose a threat to both people and property. They are comparable to tornadoes in that both are a weather phenomenon involving a vertically oriented rotating column of wind. Most tornadoes are associated with a larger parent circulation, the mesocyclone on the back of a supercell thunderstorm. Dust devils form as a swirling updraft under sunny conditions during fair weather, rarely coming close to the intensity of a tornado.

willy-willynoun
A 'willy-willy', sometimes referred to in places other than Australia as a 'dust devil', is a small tornado-like twister. By 'small', don't be misled. While it can be short, ten or fifteen seconds, and just blow a bit of hay or dirt or some litter bug's rubbish around, it can be strong, although nothing like a full-blown tornado, last twenty or thirty minutes, and cover quite a bit of ground, blowing down sheds, roofs off houses, and cause other serious damage. It's can occur anywhere from deserts to open farmland, to construction sites and open areas in cities.
Australian English. "Holey moley," Joe cried. "That bloody willy-willy's a real bastard. It's just blown the chook shed, chooks and all, into the bloody dam."
Etymology: Unknown. Sometimes claimed to be from a First Nations word, but without any substantive evidence.
