    Widin was the last attested Ostrogothic noble in Italy. After Teia's defeat at the hands of the Byzantine eunuch general Narses at the Battle of Mons Lactarius, south of present-day Naples, in October 552 or early 553, organized Ostrogothic resistance ended. Widin, however, was able to organize a Gothic revolt in the mountainous northern Italy in the 550s. According to Paul the Deacon, Widin comes Gothorum and Amingus, a Frank, rebelled against Narses.Widin was captured in 561 or 562 and sent to Constantinople. After that, the Ostrogoths faded in obscurity.

    A fortified town of European Turkey. It is surrounded on the land side by morasses, and is defended by a strong citadel, by walls, and by a fortified island in the Danube. For centuries it has been a strong post in all the contests between the Turks and their northern neighbors, and it is called by the Turks the Virgin Fort, from its never having been taken.
