In surface pattern design ungrounded refers to a pattern whose background is the plain(unpainted/ dyed) base material (such as paper, fabric etc.) rather than a pattern applied over a previously coated(grounded) surface.
Don't know if its and adjective or adverb - I always get confused with these two terms!?! In a sentence: This wallpaper is ungrounded OR this paper is non-grounded or this paper has a "plain ground". I've seen it all of these ways but means the same thing.
