Wikipedia

  1. trophies

A trophy is a tangible, durable reminder of a specific achievement, and serves as a recognition or evidence of merit. Trophies are often awarded for sporting events, from youth sports to professional level athletics. In many sports medals (or, in North America, rings) are often given out either as the trophy or along with more traditional trophies. Originally the word trophy, derived from the Greek tropaion, referred to arms, standards, other property, or human captives and body parts (e.g., headhunting) captured in battle. These war trophies commemorated the military victories of a state, army or individual combatant. In modern warfare trophy taking is discouraged, but this sense of the word is reflected in hunting trophies and human trophy collecting by serial killers.

Examples of trophies in a Sentence

  1. Toni Duggan:

You look at the U.S. team and they're a lot more successful than the men's and that's their argument. So first and foremost England need to be more successful, i can't sit here and say we're going to get to that stage, we need to be putting trophies on the table. Hopefully one day we'll be like that, but fair play to the U.S. team because it( equal pay) is what they deserve.

  2. Katherine Lewis:

But the pendulum swung too far. This is where the cult of self-esteem came from, and the trophies for everyone.

  3. Laurel Bossen:

You have to link hands and feet. Footbound women did valuable handwork at home in cottage industries. The image of them as idle sexual trophies is a grave distortion of history.

  4. Justin Turner:

Its pretty obvious what everyone thinks should happen. I mean, no one in this clubhouse or in this room is asking for a trophy to be handed us, by any means. ... But at the same time, we understand how difficult it is to win a World Series. Its hard. Its really hard. And its something that you have to earn, its pretty evident to me that it wasnt earned and its not something that a banner should be hung in their stadium (or) a trophy should be put up wherever their trophies go.

  5. Prokopis Pavlopoulos:

Let the British Museum come here and make the comparison between this (Acropolis) museum of light and the murky, if I may say, prison of the British Museum where the Parthenon Marbles are held as trophies.
