Wikipedia

  1. trophies

A trophy is a tangible, durable reminder of a specific achievement, and serves as a recognition or evidence of merit. Trophies are often awarded for sporting events, from youth sports to professional level athletics. In many sports medals (or, in North America, rings) are often given out either as the trophy or along with more traditional trophies. Originally the word trophy, derived from the Greek tropaion, referred to arms, standards, other property, or human captives and body parts (e.g., headhunting) captured in battle. These war trophies commemorated the military victories of a state, army or individual combatant. In modern warfare trophy taking is discouraged, but this sense of the word is reflected in hunting trophies and human trophy collecting by serial killers.

Examples of trophies in a Sentence

  1. Toni Duggan:

We need people like Phil who have experienced winning trophies to share that experience with us, the standards he sets are important to him, everyone's enjoying life under him and the new style we play, hopefully we can see that in the summer.

  2. Jose Mourinho:

OK, progress at many levels but not enough to be first instead of second and not enough to win the Champions League instead of the Europa League, but enough to finish second, to be stable to win some trophies to reach some finals but we need to do more.

  3. Toni Duggan:

You look at the U.S. team and they're a lot more successful than the men's and that's their argument. So first and foremost England need to be more successful, i can't sit here and say we're going to get to that stage, we need to be putting trophies on the table. Hopefully one day we'll be like that, but fair play to the U.S. team because it( equal pay) is what they deserve.

  4. Rick DePiro:

It's better to be a janitor in heaven Than to sit on a throne in hell It's better to sweep the streets of gold Than to have illegitimate unearned wealth. We live today in a world of much irrational entitlement and participation trophies. Earn your place, fight for your rights, stand with honor and for God's sake, keep quiet unless you actually know what you're talking about!

  5. Dimitris Itoudis:

If I could say for sure we would break the jinx and win the trophy I would have to be a magician and I am not a magician, I am just a coach, it's a great honor for the club to see them pick up these personal trophies but the most important thing is that they all said to me they were only interested in winning the title.
