Wikipedia

  1. Trigeminal nerve

In neuroanatomy, the trigeminal nerve (lit. triplet nerve), also known as the fifth cranial nerve, cranial nerve V, or simply CN V, is a cranial nerve responsible for sensation in the face and motor functions such as biting and chewing; it is the most complex of the cranial nerves. Its name ("trigeminal", from Latin tri- 'three', and -geminus 'twin') derives from each of the two nerves (one on each side of the pons) having three major branches: the ophthalmic nerve (V1), the maxillary nerve (V2), and the mandibular nerve (V3). The ophthalmic and maxillary nerves are purely sensory, whereas the mandibular nerve supplies motor as well as sensory (or "cutaneous") functions. Adding to the complexity of this nerve is that autonomic nerve fibers as well as special sensory fibers (taste) are contained within it. The motor division of the trigeminal nerve derives from the basal plate of the embryonic pons, and the sensory division originates in the cranial neural crest. Sensory information from the face and body is processed by parallel pathways in the central nervous system.

  1. trigeminal nerve

The trigeminal nerve is the fifth pair of cranial nerves, responsible for sensation in the face and motor functions such as biting and chewing. It is the largest of the cranial nerves and is divided into three branches, hence its name 'trigeminal' that derives from the Latin 'trigeminus' meaning 'threefold'. These three branches provide sensory information from the scalp, forehead, and face, as well as parts of the mouth and nose. Disorders or damage to the trigeminal nerve can result in loss of sensation, paralysis, or severe facial pain known as trigeminal neuralgia.

  1. Trigeminal nerve

The trigeminal nerve is a nerve responsible for sensation in the face and certain motor functions such as biting and chewing. It is the largest of the cranial nerves. Its name derives from the fact that each trigeminal nerve, one on each side of the pons, has three major branches: the ophthalmic nerve, the maxillary nerve, and the mandibular nerve. The ophthalmic and maxillary nerves are purely sensory. The mandibular nerve has both sensory and motor functions. Sensory information from the face and body is processed by parallel pathways in the central nervous system. The motor division of the trigeminal nerve is derived from the basal plate of the embryonic pons, while the sensory division originates from the cranial neural crest.

  1. Trigeminal Nerve

The 5th and largest cranial nerve. The trigeminal nerve is a mixed motor and sensory nerve. The larger sensory part forms the ophthalmic, mandibular, and maxillary nerves which carry afferents sensitive to external or internal stimuli from the skin, muscles, and joints of the face and mouth and from the teeth. Most of these fibers originate from cells of the trigeminal ganglion and project to the trigeminal nucleus of the brain stem. The smaller motor part arises from the brain stem trigeminal motor nucleus and innervates the muscles of mastication.
