  1. Tempted

"Tempted" was the second single released from Squeeze's fourth album, East Side Story. Over the years it has become one of Squeeze's most well-known songs, despite failing to crack the Top 40 in any country it was released in; Stewart Mason of AllMusic remarked, "Although its increasing ubiquity on '80s hits radio and on television would suggest otherwise, Squeeze's "Tempted" was not actually a hit single." The song also became ingrained in public consciousness due to its use in commercials by Burger King and Heineken, and the video games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Rock Band. To this day, "Tempted" still gets moderate airplay from adult alternative-formatted radio stations. Unlike other Squeeze songs, which are usually sung by guitarist/songwriter Glenn Tilbrook or less often guitarist/lyricist Chris Difford, the song's lead vocal is sung by keyboardist Paul Carrack, though Tilbrook and producer Elvis Costello also trade a few lines in the second verse. The song was written by Squeeze members Difford and Tilbrook.

Examples of tempted in a Sentence

  1. Carlyle:

Poverty, we may say, surrounds a man with ready-made barriers, which if they do mournfully gall and hamper, do at least prescribe for him, and force on him, a sort of course and goal; a safe and beaten, though a circuitous, course. A great part of his guidance is secure against fatal error, is withdrawn from his control. The rich, again, has his whole life to guide, without goal or barrier, save of his own choosing, and, tempted, is too likely to guide it ill.

  2. Hannah Arendt:

If you ask a member of this generation two simple questions: How do you want the world to be in fifty years? and What do you want your life to be like five years from now? the answers are quite often preceded by Provided there is still a world and Provided I am still alive. To the often-heard question, Who are they, this new generation? one is tempted to answer, Those who hear the ticking. And to the other question, Who are they who utterly deny them? the answer may well be, Those who do not know, or refuse to face, things as they really are.

  3. Vincent Van Gogh:

Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.”

  4. David Yepsen:

It's very important for Trump to bounce back strong. The sense of his inevitability is one of his strengths, if he looks weak, others will pile on and some may be tempted to leave him.

  5. Andrew Cooper:

He may be tempted to have a quiet life and play golf, but there's going to be a lot of pressure on him to play the global role, and perhaps even some pressure to have material benefits from that.
