Founded in the early 1990s, the Taliban emerged from the Pakistani-sponsored madrassas during the Afghan civil war. It ruled most of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, enforcing a strict form of Sharia law. The group is known for its harsh treatment of women and its destruction of cultural artifacts.
