Space weather
Space weather is the concept of changing environmental conditions in near-Earth space or the space from the Sun's atmosphere to the Earth's atmosphere. It is distinct from the concept of weather within the Earth's atmosphere. Space weather is the description of changes in the ambient plasma, magnetic fields, radiation, and other matter in space. Much of space weather is driven by energy carried through interplanetary space by the solar wind from regions near the surface of the Sun and the Sun's atmosphere. The term space weather is sometimes used to refer to changes in interplanetary space. Space weather has two focal points: scientific research and applications. The term space weather was not used until the 1990s. Prior to that time, activities now known as space weather were considered to be part of physics or aeronomy or space exploration.

Space telescopes can't take us this close to the sun, the eclipse provides an opportunity for scientists to gather observations very close to the sun in white light, infrared, other wavelengths. This is the region that sets the boundary conditions for how the corona is heated, how is the solar wind accelerated -- conditions we call space weather. We are continuously still learning about this environment.
On Earth, we can predict if it is going to rain pretty much anywhere in the world very accurately, and space weather just isn't there yet, our predictions lag behind terrestrial weather by 50 years, if not more. What we need is to grasp the underlying physics behind space weather, and this starts at the Sun, which is what The Inouye Solar Telescope will study over the next decades.
Even when its a quiet space weather day, in terms of explosive solar storms, theres this base level of weather always happening on the sun, and those little dynamics are driving dynamics on Earth, too.
The beautiful visible manifestation [ of space weather ] is the northern lights that everyone loves — that's the nice, pretty part. But the consequences, as we found out on Friday, can be quite significant to some of these technologies.
We hope that an eclipse close to solar maximum will not only show us an awe-inspiring corona, but also some big, interesting sunspots on the face of the Sun to help us learn about living inside the atmosphere of an active star and the space weather it creates.
