Military Dictionary and Gazetteer

  1. slaves

(native name Slowene, or Slowane). The general name of a group of nations belonging to the Aryan family, whose settlements extend from the Elbe to Kamtschatka, and from the Frozen Sea to Ragusa on the Adriatic, the whole of Eastern Europe being almost exclusively occupied by them. The original names of the Slavic tribes seem to have been Winds, or Wends (Venedi), and Serbs. The latter of these names is spoken of by Procopius as the ancient name common to the whole Slavic stock. The Slavonians proper are a handsome, tall, and slender race.

The effect of the ambulance-chasing lawyers and the play-it-safe judges is that we have got to the point where we have lost our operational capability to do tactical questioning. That in itself brings risks to the lives of the people we deploy, these insurgents are not nice people. These are criminals. They behead people ; they keep sex slaves. They are not normal people.

  2. Bob Corker:

The country we believe has 12-14 million slaves, which is close to half the number we believe exists worldwide, it's obviously a very significant issue and when he's here, it's one I certainly plan to raise.

  3. Ben Affleck:

I didn't want any television show about my family to include a guy who owned slaves. I was embarrassed. The very thought left a bad taste in my mouth, i regret my initial thoughts that the issue of slavery not be included in the story.

  4. Kanisha Tillman:

Clearly, Winterville Charter Academy parents know that's not how the history works, but what upset me even more -- not only is she teaching history and the Constitution wrong -- but the fact that she personalized it and made Winterville Charter Academy parents students stand up, raise their hand, separate themselves from the rest of the class, and say that they would be working for her in the field as slaves.

  5. Alexis Charles Henri Clrel de Tocqueville:

Whoever has inhabited the United States must have perceived that in those parts of the Union in which the Negroes are no longer slaves the have in no wise drawn nearer to the whites. On the contrary, the prejudice of race appears to be stronger in the states that have abolished slavery than those where it still exists and nowhere is it intolerant as in those states where servitude has never been known.
