Wikipedia
Sinopia
Sinopia (also known as sinoper, named after the now Turkish city Sinop) is a dark reddish-brown natural earth pigment, whose reddish colour comes from hematite, a dehydrated form of iron oxide. It was widely used in Classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages for painting, and during the Renaissance it was often used on the rough initial layer of plaster for the underdrawing for a fresco. The word came to be used both for the pigment and for the preparatory drawing itself, which may be revealed when a fresco is stripped from its wall for transfer. During the Middle Ages sinopia in Latin and Italian came to mean simply a red ochre. It entered the English language as the word sinoper, meaning a red earth colour.Sinopia is a colour in various modern colour systems.

Sinopia is a reddish-brown natural earth pigment used in traditional oil painting and frescoes as an underpainting or sketch guide. It's named after the city of Sinop in Turkey, where it was commonly sourced. This preliminary sketch gives the artist a guideline for their final piece and helps determine the piece's composition and layout.

Sinopia
Sinopia is a reddish-brown ochre-like earth color pigment used in traditional oil painting. It is used for the cartoon or underpainting for a fresco; indeed, the term is also synecdochically used to refer to underpainting done in sinopia. It is composed of iron oxides, from a kind of clay or quartz called sinople. Sinopia was written about by Cennino Cennini in "Il libro dell'arte" in the 15th century and described thus: "a natural color known as sinoper, or porphyry, is red; and this color is lean and dry in character. It stands working up well; for the more it is worked up, the finer it becomes. It is good for use on panel or anconas, or on the wall, in fresco or in secco." Cennini follows this discussion with a look at a special kind of sinopia used in Florence for painting flesh colors.
