    LL.D., American astronomer, born Wallace, (Nova Scotia), 12 March, 1835. Went to the United States in ’53, and was appointed computor on the Nautical Almanack. In ’77 he became senior professor of mathematics in the U. S. navy. He has been associated with the equipment of the Lick observatory, and has written many works on mathematics and astronomy, as well as Principles of Political Economy, 1885.
