sequoia sempervirens
Sequoia sempervirens, commonly known as the Coast Redwood or California Redwood, is a species of evergreen tree native to the western coast of the United States, specifically in the states of California and Oregon. It is known for its exceptional height, often growing over 300 feet tall, making it one of the tallest living species on earth. The bark of the tree is very thick and the wood is known for its resistance to disease and fire. Its longevity can extend over thousands of years, hence the name "sempervirens" which means "always green" or "everlasting" in Latin.

Sequoia sempervirens
Sequoia sempervirens is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae. Common names include coast redwood, California redwood, and giant redwood. It is an evergreen, long-lived, monoecious tree living 1200–1800 years or more. This species includes the tallest trees living now on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet in height and up to 26 feet in diameter at breast height. Before commercial logging and clearing began by the 1850s, this massive tree occurred naturally in an estimated 2,100,000 acres along much of coastal California and the southwestern corner of coastal Oregon within the United States. An estimated 95% or more of the original old-growth redwood forest has been cut down, due to its excellent properties for use as lumber in construction. The name sequoia sometimes refers to the subfamily Sequoioideae, which includes S. sempervirens along with Sequoiadendron and Metasequoia. On its own, the term redwood usually refers to the coast redwood, which is covered in this article, and not to the other two species.
