  1. schwann

Schwann generally refers to Theodor Schwann, a German physiologist. However, in the context of biology, Schwann cells are a type of glial cell that keep peripheral nerve fibres (both myelinated and unmyelinated) alive. Named after Theodor Schwann, these cells wrap around axons of motor and sensory neurons to form the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath functions as an insulator to increase the speed of impulse transmission.
