  1. ribbon development

Ribbon development is a form of real estate development in which buildings and infrastructures are constructed along the routes of transportation such as highways, railways, and coastlines. This sort of development often forms a thin, elongated pattern, resembling a ribbon, hence the name. The concept was most prominent during the 1920s and 30s as private vehicle ownership started to increase.

Wikidata

  1. Ribbon development

Ribbon development means building houses along the routes of communications radiating from a human settlement. Such development generated great concern in the United Kingdom during the 1920s and the 1930s, as well as in numerous other countries. Increasing motor car ownership meant that houses could be sold even if remote from shops and other services. It was attractive to developers because they did not have to waste money or plot space constructing roads. The practice became seen as inefficient use of resources and a precursor to urban sprawl, meaning that a key aim for the United Kingdom's post-War planning system was to halt ribbon development. It led to the introduction of green belt policies.

Building highways implies scope for activities on either side of the highways. If it turns out to be a busy road due to various dynamic reasons or causes, human activities steadily increase. The high road itself becomes a township. The highways provide added scope for urbanisation particularly in a rural country like India, eager to transfer population to the urban non-traditional employment sector and living. The sides of these newly widened and developed high ways are god send to neighbouring villages as they get more opportunities for jobs like servicing, repairs and even sometimes manufacturing and ware housing.
The obverse of this development is increased pollution all along and increased demand for civic amenities like electricity water sewage disposal etc. Or, urban management problems get built into maintenance of highways gradually.
Stock examples of high way development or ribbon development are the creation of corridors like Mumbai-New Delhi industrial corridor, Amritsar-New Delhi-Kolkotta corridor, Bangalore Chennai corridor etc. These corridors are providing scope for faster urbanisation of India and the concomitant problems of pollution shortage of amenities etc. too.
