Wikipedia

  1. Ratcheting

In a famous article written by J. Bree in 1967, the phenomenon of ratcheting is described as "Unsymmetric cycles of stress between prescribed limits will cause progressive ‘creep’ or ‘ratchet(t)ing’ in the direction of the mean stress". In continuum mechanics, ratcheting is a behavior in which plastic deformation accumulates due to cyclic mechanical or thermal stress. Ratcheting is a progressive, incremental inelastic deformation characterized by a shift of the stress-strain hysteresis loop along the strain axis. When the amplitude of cyclic stresses exceed the elastic limit, the plastic deformation that occurs keep accumulating paving way for a catastrophic failure of the structure. Nonlinear kinematic hardening, which occurs when the stress state reaches the yield surface, is considered as the main mechanism behind ratcheting. Several factors influences the extent of ratcheting including the load condition, mean stress, stress amplitude, stress ratio, load history, plastic slip, dislocation movement, and cells deformations. This effect is represented in terms of the Bree diagram. To simulate such a model, incremental plastic deformation terms are added to general cyclic stress-strain equations. Multiple models are proposed to simulate ratcheting, such as Chaboche, Ohno-Wang, Armstrong–Frederick, etc.Ratcheting is a significant effect to be considered to check permanent deformation in systems which undergoes a cyclic loading. Common examples of such repetitive stresses include sea waves, road traffic, and earthquakes. Initially it was studied to inspect the permanent deformation of thin, nuclear fuel cans with an internal pressure and temperature gradient while undergoing repetitive non-zero mean stresses. 1. Meryam Omi:

We're going to keep ratcheting up the minimum standards and our expectations from the companies; it's not a finished business.

  2. President Trump:

We can not be the policeman of the world, we can not protect countries all over the world, where they're not paying us what we need. When asked whether United States has to do something regarding North Korea, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said, Well yes, we do have to do something, and so we have to do something, again, with partners in the region and globally, and that involves enforcement of the UN sanctions that are in place. United States may mean ratcheting up those sanctions even further, and it also means being prepared for military operations if necessary, he said. Trump has, since in office, attempted to form alliances with world leaders to solve such global crises as the Syrian civil war and the North Korea nuclear threat, including an outreach to China President XI Jinping.

  3. Malcolm Chalmers:

One of the few objectives that the Russian and US leadership share at the moment is avoiding a direct conflict between the two powers, russia knows that a conventional confrontation with NATO would be over very quickly for them. However, there is some sense in ratcheting up the idea that it is willing to take that risk, if it means it can extract more concessions from the West.

  4. Paul Carroll:

If you do this kind of ratcheting( up) of rhetorical tensions but also sending military hardware into the region, if you do that absent of any kind of offramp or door or window for the North Koreans to consider walking through and reengaging in any sort of discussions, bad things are going to happen.

  5. Florian Hense:

As the U.S. president is ratcheting up trade tensions, he is using tariffs to pursue non-economic goals which is worrisome and highlights the risk of a solution being very far away.
