progressor
The Noon Universe (Russian term: "Мир Полудня" or "Мир Полдня" – "World of Noon"; also known as the “Wanderers’ Universe”) is a fictional future setting for a number of hard science fiction novels written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. The universe is named after Noon: 22nd Century, chronologically the first novel from the series. According to Arkady Strugatsky, at first, the brothers did not make a conscious effort to create a fictional universe. Rather, they reused characters and settings from prior works whenever they found it convenient. It wasn't until later that they began drawing on common themes and plot threads from various novels to create newer works.

Progressor
Progressors in science fiction are people of an advanced space-faring civilization who facilitate progress of less advanced civilizations. It comes from a perspective very much the opposite of what motivates Star Trek's famous Prime Directive. The term progressor was coined by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky for their Noon Universe, the term was mentioned in Hard to Be a God, and later it was also used by Sergey Lukyanenko in the duology The Stars Are Cold Toys, although with a somewhat different meaning. Doris Lessing explores the same themes in her Canopus in Argos series, but she calls it forced evolution. A similar concept is the basis of Iain M. Banks' Culture series; the organization carrying out the work is named Special Circumstances. David Brin's Uplift Universe novels focus on the closely related phenomenon of biological uplift.
