Wikipedia

  1. Private network

In IP networking, a private network is a network that uses private IP address space. Both, the IPv4 and the IPv6 specifications define private IP address ranges. These addresses are commonly used for local area networks (LANs) in residential, office, and enterprise environments. Private network addresses are not allocated to any specific organization. Anyone may use these addresses without approval from regional or local Internet registries. Private IP address spaces were originally defined to assist in delaying IPv4 address exhaustion. IP packets originating from or addressed to a private IP address cannot be routed through the public Internet.

Avoid hotel WiFi and business centersIf your business has a properly configured VPN -- a Virtual Private Network -- your information is generally safe. But occasionally, if you're using the hotel’s WiFi -- either in the business center or your room -- it will block your VPN or only certain ones will work. A lot of these hotels, to even get online, you can't get on the WiFi without first accepting the terms of service or paying or something. So you can't use your VPN for that portion and that's the most dangerous period, a lot of those use expired SSL search that are not compatible with modern browsers.

The Iranian government is blocking access to certain IP ranges altogether (such as news sites) and at the same time they are also allowing certain sites to be accessed, but they are using content filtering to block what they consider to be risky or subversive, for example Twitter hashtags. So the Iranian activists are using different ‘tunneling’ methods to hide their traffic through encryption and therefore bypass government restrictions – for instance, they use a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
