  1. Prime minister

A prime minister is the most senior minister of cabinet in the executive branch of government in a parliamentary system. In many systems, the prime minister selects and may dismiss other members of the cabinet, and allocates posts to members within the government. In most systems, the prime minister is the presiding member and chairman of the cabinet. In a minority of systems, notably in semi-presidential systems of government, a prime minister is the official who is appointed to manage the civil service and execute the directives of the head of state. In parliamentary systems fashioned after the Westminster system, the prime minister is the presiding and actual head of the government and head of the executive branch. In such systems, the head of state or the head of state's official representative usually holds a largely ceremonial position, although often with reserve powers. The prime minister is often, but not always, a member of parliament and is expected with other ministers to ensure the passage of bills through the legislature. In some monarchies the monarch may also exercise executive powers which are constitutionally vested in the crown and may be exercised without the approval of parliament.

Examples of prime minister in a Sentence

  1. Bernadette Meehan:

As a matter of long-standing practice and principle, we do not see heads of state or candidates in close proximity to their elections, so as to avoid the appearance of influencing a democratic election in a foreign country, accordingly, the president will not be meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu because of the proximity to the Israeli election, which is just two weeks after his planned address to the U.S. Congress.

  2. Chaturon Chaisaeng:

He persuaded his sister to come into politics and become the prime minister without much preparation, and now she faces a very serious situation.

  3. Matteo Salvini:

ITALY'S BERLUSCONI ADOPTS TRUMP'S RHETORIC AS ELECTION NEARS, CALLS MIGRANTS A 'SOCIAL BOMB' The coalition leaders have said whichever party gets the most votes will get to choose the prime minister. Berlusconi has said he would appoint longtime ally and European Parliament President Antonio Tajani. Should the League get more votes, that would open the door to Salvini being prime minister. However, that is unlikely if the polls are accurate, and there are indications that Salvini and Berlusconi are more likely to hash out a deal where Salvini gets a migration-focused position at the Interior Department. Give me the interior ministry for three months and you'll see what order and cleanliness I bring back from north to south all over Italy.

  4. Philip Hammond:

One way or another Parliament is going to have the opportunity this week to decide what it is in favor of, and I hope that it will take that opportunity -- if it can't get behind the Prime Minister's deal -- to say clearly and unambiguously what it can get behind.

  5. Bruce Riedel:

The burden is on Prime Minister Sharif to show he can unite the country to defend its children.
