  1. Pierhead jump

Nautical, traditional. Literally "to jump onto a ship which has already released its mooring ropes, and which is departing from a port. It implies that a crew-member has been appointed to the ship "at the last minute", so as to replace a missing or incapacitated crew-member. The meaning expands into " a risky venture" in that the seafarer is joining a ship of unknown safety standards, and conversely, the ship is taking on board a seafarer of unknown experience and reliability. I have heard the expression used in non-nautical circumstances in the sense of "joining a team as a last-minute replacement."

"I did a pier-head jump onto the 'Magdalena' when the Bosun was injured".

    Etymology: Nautical, traditional.
