Per mille (from Latin per mīlle, "in each thousand") is an expression that means parts per thousand. Other recognised spellings include per mil, per mill, permil, permill, or permille.The associated sign is written ‰, which looks like a percent sign % with an extra zero or o in the divisor. The term occurs so rarely in English that major dictionaries do not agree on the spelling and some major dictionaries such as Macmillan do not even contain an entry. The term is more common in other European languages where it is used to express fractions smaller than 1%. One common usage is blood alcohol content, which is usually expressed as a percentage in English-speaking countries. Per mille should not be confused with parts per million (ppm).

A per mil, per mille, or per mill is a tenth of a percent or one part per thousand. It is written with U+2030 ‰ per mille sign, which looks like a percent sign with an extra zero at the end. It can be seen as a stylized form of the three zeros in the denominator although it originates from an alteration of the percent sign. The term is so rarely used in English that major dictionaries do not agree on the spelling or pronunciation and often do not list the other variants or do not even have an entry. The term is very common in most other languages, for example in expressing blood alcohol content, which is usually expressed in percent in English-speaking countries.
