Wikidata
Pathetic fallacy
The pathetic fallacy ascribes human, emotional qualities to inanimate objects; as if possessed of human awareness. In describing and ascribing sentience to things, in the term pathetic fallacy, the adjective pathetic communicates feelings of two types, pathos and empathy. In discussions of literature and of the Arts, the pathetic fallacy is thematically akin to the critical categories of anthropomorphism; to Personification; and to Animism. The British cultural critic John Ruskin, introduced and used the term pathetic fallacy in the book Modern Painters as an expression of æsthetic judgement, which disapproved of excessive sentiment in the execution of a work of art; nonetheless, the pathetic fallacy occasionally is countered by the poetic license exercised by the poet and by the poetesss, as in the classical form of the pastoral elegy.
