ChatGPT

  1. ozone layer

The ozone layer is a region of Earth's stratosphere that contains a high concentration of ozone molecules (O3). This layer absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, protecting living organisms on Earth from potential damage such as skin cancer and cataracts. It is located approximately 10 to 30 kilometers above the Earth's surface.

Wikidata

  1. Ozone layer

The ozone layer is a layer in Earth's atmosphere which absorbs most of the Sun's UV radiation. It contains relatively high concentrations of ozone, although it is still very small with regard to ordinary oxygen, and is less than ten parts per million, the average ozone concentration in Earth's atmosphere being only about 0.6 parts per million. The ozone layer is mainly found in the lower portion of the stratosphere from approximately 20 to 30 kilometres above Earth, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically. The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. Its properties were explored in detail by the British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer that could be used to measure stratospheric ozone from the ground. Between 1928 and 1958 Dobson established a worldwide network of ozone monitoring stations, which continue to operate to this day. The "Dobson unit", a convenient measure of the columnar density of ozone overhead, is named in his honor. The ozone layer absorbs 97–99% of the Sun's medium-frequency ultraviolet light, which potentially damages exposed life forms on Earth.

Examples of ozone layer in a Sentence

  1. Brian Fields:

Earth-based catastrophes such as large-scale volcanism and global warming can destroy the ozone layer, too, but evidence for those is inconclusive for the time interval in question.

  2. George Shultz:

In the mid-80s, we found a lot of scientists saying the ozone layer is depleting, and there were some who doubted it, but they all agreed that if it happened, it would be a catastrophe. So President Reagan was convinced that the people who were worried were right.

  3. Paul Young:

The ozone layer problem was simpler than the climate problem. You had a handful of companies who are producing a handful of chemicals for a handful of different uses, and it was relatively straightforward for them to come up with alternatives for that, but this is still a great example of how science, identifying a problem, and the world acting comparatively quickly, acknowledging that problem and coming together to address it, and that is the model that we need to address climate change.

  4. John McCain:

Maybe it was through some medium that I'm not familiar with. Maybe bouncing it off the ozone layer, for all I know, there's a lot of holes in the ozone layer, so maybe it wasn't the ozone layer that he bounced it off of. Maybe it was through hand telegraph, maybe sign language, who knows?
