The order was founded in 1795, in County Armagh, Ireland, and is named after King William III of England, also known as Prince of Orange. Its main aim is to uphold the Protestant faith and the British monarchy, and to commemorate the victory of William of Orange over Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.
