Wikidata
Ngerulmud
Ngerulmud, a locality in the State of Melekeok, is the capital of Palau. Although the capital was originally located in Koror, the country's constitution provided that the Olbiil Era Kelulau "designate a place in Babeldaob to be the permanent capital", with the added requirement that this occur "not later than ten years after the effective date of this Constitution". A new capital had been planned as early as 1986, when a contract for the construction of the capitol complex was assigned to a Hawaiʻi-based architecture firm, but further progress was not made until the early 2000s. Containing separate buildings for the legislative, judicial, and executive branches, connected via a central open plaza, the complex cost over US$45 million, and was officially opened on 7 October 2006, with over 5,000 people in attendance. Government officials moved their offices from Koror to Ngerulmud shortly after. Ngerulmud is located 20 km northeast of Koror on Babeldaob, the country's largest island, and 2 km northwest of Melekeok village.
