The term "music of the spheres" refers to an ancient philosophical concept that regards proportions in the movements of celestial bodies — the sun, moon, and planets — as a form of music. This music isn't audible, but a harmonic, mathematical or religious concept. The idea was proposed by philosophers such as Pythagoras, who believed that these celestial bodies produced a divine sound of harmony as they moved in the cosmos. The concept represents the perfection and harmony of the universe and its divine design.

Examples of music of the spheres in a Sentence

  1. Sir Thomas Browne:

Sure there is music even in the beauty, and the silent note which Cupid strikes, far sweeter than the sound of an instrument. For there is music wherever there is harmony, order and proportion; and thus far we may maintain the music of the spheres; for those well ordered motions, and regular paces, though they give no sound unto the ear, yet to the understanding they strike a note most full of harmony.

  2. Albert Einstein:

The fanatical atheists...are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after hard struggle. They are creatures who—in their grudge against the traditional 'opium of the people'—cannot bear the music of the spheres.
