Wikipedia

  1. matches

A match is a tool for starting a fire. Typically, matches are made of small wooden sticks or stiff paper. One end is coated with a material that can be ignited by friction generated by striking the match against a suitable surface. Wooden matches are packaged in matchboxes, and paper matches are partially cut into rows and stapled into matchbooks. The coated end of a match, known as the match "head", consists of a bead of active ingredients and binder, often colored for easier inspection. There are two main types of matches: safety matches, which can be struck only against a specially prepared surface, and strike-anywhere matches, for which any suitably frictional surface can be used. Because of the substance used to coat each match, this makes them non-biodegradable.

Examples of matches in a Sentence

  1. Naomi Osaka:

This is something that I have been working on a lot, which is trying to get deeper in tournaments more consistently. I think I have been able to do that, but for me right now I just try to keep looking forward. So I'm not really satisfied — I am happy that I'm here, but at the same time I want to keep going. There are more matches to win.

  2. Zlatko Dalic:

Of course there is some power left for the English — we will not stop, we will try to play our best game then, we have two matches to play, we are very motivated, we will give our all.

  3. Mats Wilander:

I think she is the most dangerous floater, I would say she is now 100 percent ready, with her game she doesn't need lots of grasscourt matches. When you hit the ball as hard as she does it's first-strike tennis and no one is better than her at that.

  4. Maria Sharapova:

On paper it's a step in the right direction. It's tough to just assess a single tournament. I have to put a lot of things in perspective for the last-four, five weeks since the clay season, coming into this part of the year, I was losing a few first-round matches, matches that I wanted to be winning. But to have had the victories I have had... obviously moving a step in the right direction. But today was not one of those steps.

  5. Maren Costa:

Amazon's Shipment Shipment Zero announcement is a first step, and it showed the positive impact that employee pressure can have, we all — individuals, corporations, governments — simply need to do more. Amazon needs a company-wide plan that matches the scale and urgency of the climate crisis, and Shipment Zero is not nearly enough.
